The INTERNATIONAL VANADIUM SYMPOSIUM 2018 will be held at the HOLIDAY INN HOTEL (IHG hotel chain, with more than 3.000 hotels worldwide)   in downtown Montevideo, only one block from Independence Square with easy access to the best attractions and neighborhoods  in Montevideo, capital city of Uruguay.

Hotel guests can easily enjoy shopping in the area along 18 de Julio Avenue,  main shopping street in downtown, walk along  the Rambla, a scenic bayside   lined with popular attractions and beautiful view over the River Plate estuary  (Rio de la Plata) or  walk along the pedestrian Sarandi street and visit the old City (Ciudad Vieja) passing by the Citadel gate in Independence Square, entry to the city in  the Spanish Colonial times, around 1724 when the city was founded.   The pedestrian walk leads to the Cathedral square (Plaza Matriz) where the first  Government house was established, now a museum (el Cabildo) and where the first Constitution was sworn in 1830.  Across from the Cathedral is a beautiful Spanish colonial square and fountain.    Further up the pedestrian walk is the oldest square in the city,  Zabala Square,  honoring Bruno Mauricio de Zabala,  Montevideo Spanish founder in 1724.     Along 18 de Julio Avenue you can find many restaurants and stores with all brands, and the pedestrian Sarandi  street is full of restaurants, pubs, stores,   leading to the port area  where the Port Market (Mercado del Puerto) offers a great variety of typical Uruguayan  “parrilladas” (barbeque restaurants).  

In Independence Square we also have the Mausoleum and statue of José Gervasio Artigas, our national heroe who fought for our independence  obtained in 1825.  Also in Independence Square  we have the  Radisson Hotel, the former Governnment house till a few years ago, now used for receptions and some official activities,  and the new Government building and Presidential offices.  Also around Independence Square  we also have  the iconic Salvo building built in 1920 as a hotel and apartments, once the tallest building in South America.    Just one block further from Independence Square is the Solis Theatre, recently renewed, featuring international plays and orchestras.   Just a few blocks from the Holiday Inn is also the SODRE theatre, also featuring many international plays, ballet  and shows.

The  Symposium venue is located only 10 minutes drive from Pocitos and Punta Carretas residential neighborhoods and Punta Carretas  Shopping Mall, and 30 minutes drive from the airport, 20 kms away.   Port ferry terminal is just 5 minutes away.
